Since the refrigerant used in most automotive air conditioning systems is not good for the environment, GM is proud to announce it will use a better type of refrigerant (called HFO-1234yf) in its vehicles that it says only stays in the atmosphere for 11 days. The standard R-134a refrigerant, GM says, has an atmospheric life of more than 13 years

The groundbreaking ceremony at its Advanced Technical Center in the Chinese city of Shanghai further reinforces GM’s commitment to a greener automotive future. After construction is completed in 2011, GM’s Advanced Technical Center will house 62 test centers and nine distinct research labs while providing employment opportunities for up to 300 designers, researchers, engineers and technicians.

Austin and New York City will be first with the rest of New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut and Texas joining Michigan, Washington DC and California in early 2011.
