While overall vehicle sales were nearly flat (up to 746,928 this year compared to 746,789 last year), hybrid sales rose 21 percent to 20,003 units (the number is undoubtedly higher, because not every automaker breaks out hybrid sales). The “Access OK” tags have allowed its possessors to cruise in the carpool lanes even while driving solo. The special lanes - alternatively known as HOV lanes (High Occupancy Vehicle) or diamond lanes - have proven to be a great time saver on California’s clogged freeway system, but not everyone can find a ride-share partner to grant them access.

After all, the automaker has seen sales of its latest hybrids skyrocket in its home market , and much of that success has been attributed to the generous tax incentives levied on hybrid vehicles in Japan along with relatively high gas prices. For instance, Toyota sold an impressive 22,292 Prius hybrids in the month of June in Japan, and some buyers are adding their names to waiting lists that could stretch for months.
