The model, called the Toyota SAI, should slot nicely between the Prius and the Crown hybrid . The main difference between the two models is said to be the lower equipment level in the Toyota versus its stablemate from Lexus, which helps reduce the sticker price of the car by about half a million yen (roughly $5,500)

After all, the automaker has seen sales of its latest hybrids skyrocket in its home market , and much of that success has been attributed to the generous tax incentives levied on hybrid vehicles in Japan along with relatively high gas prices. For instance, Toyota sold an impressive 22,292 Prius hybrids in the month of June in Japan, and some buyers are adding their names to waiting lists that could stretch for months.

The HS will be available in 2 trim levels, with the base model starting at $34,200 and the Premium model going for $36,970. The EPA has rated the 2.4-liter HS at 35 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
