But that doesn’t mean there isn’t some shady mining going on to find more of the stuff that is regularly seen as the most important advanced vehicle battery material for the coming decades. For example, there is a lithium rush going on in West Quebec, Canada that has some property owners discovering “unknown prospectors drilling horizontally onto their land in their search for minerals.” Yikes

However, it has been strongly rumored that one of the few new vehicles on display will be an all-electric version of the Fiat 500 .

The Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies ( RUSNANO ), an entity formed to advance projects with “high commercial potential or social benefit,” has teamed up with the prolific battery maker to build a plant in Novosibirsk that will supply lithium ion-based energy storage for electric transportation, communications and other markets

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Manufacturing/Plants , Nissan , Renault Renault and Nissan made it known many months ago that they intended to build lithium ion battery plants in Europe to supply all of the electric vehicles that they will be introducing in the next several years. The first battery plant will be going to Portugal and will be located at an existing Renault complex 155 miles north of Lisbon. The plant will have an initial capacity of supplying packs for 50,000 vehicles a year from 2012.

Filed under: Porsche Lithium ion batteries are all the rage these days with so many manufacturers planning to use them for hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Porsche today announced that it will be the first automaker to offer a lithium ion starter battery for conventional vehicles. The new battery will be available as an option for the 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder.

The money will be used to fund the research and development of the vans as well as the construction and deployment. Mercedes will produce up to 50 plug-in Sprinters that have no internal combustion powertrain at all

Renault, the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and the French Strategic Investment Fund (FSI) will create a joint venture for EV batteries
