Natural gas is an increasingly popular fuel for commercial applications like this truck because these vehicles typically operate from a central depot over a limited range. According to the source, if the German automaker chooses to go the three-cylinder route, the engine may be one cylinder bank of the company’s well-regarded V6 line.

The new architecture would form the basis of the next generation of Smart cars as well as the new Twizzy electric vehicle from Renault. Like the current Smart ForTwo, the new platform will be rear engine and rear wheel drive but it will be able to accomodate a stretched wheelbase for a new ForFour.

Instead, the company will be opening a new engineering office in Redford Township, MI west of Detroit. The new facility will expand its focus beyond just hybrids to all manner of alternative powertrains, including electric drive.
