Click on image for full-resolution gallery If I told you a few years ago that a medium-sized sedan would get a 1.6-liter diesel engine, you might have thought that I was crazy. However, Peugeot is on to something since they put a 1.6-liter 110hp HDi diesel in the Peugeot 407, getting a relatively large car that burns just 4.9 l/100 km of diesel (equivalent to 48 mpg) and keeps CO 2 emissions at a respectable 129 g/km. The car not only has the thrifty engine that is found in other PSA products like the 207, 308, C4, and Ford’s Focus and C-Max, but it also spots the latest Michelin Energy Saver tires for extra fuel savings.

High efficiency cars have long used low rolling resistance tires to help reduce frictional losses. However, some of the same properties that give such tires less resistance to rolling down the road also mean they sometimes also have less grip on the road, resulting in degraded handling and braking.
