Filed under: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels , USA , Racing It hasn’t been easy for many aspiring EV builders to get A123 ‘s lithium cells for their projects, but a new deal struck by the battery maker and Mavizen may change that. The TTXGP -affiliated electric motorcycle maker has reached an agreement that will see them distributing their AMP20 prismatic cells, ostensibly for motorsport applications. They will eventually have access to other product as well.

The Canadian designer decided to build a better electric road racer using some of the same concepts and techniques employed by those winged workhorses of the North with the resulting motorcycle exemplifying the use of light weight as a weapon.

Münch Racing wins TTXGP World Championship in hollow victory thumbnail

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels , Racing The TTXGP ‘s first full season of electric motorcycle racing culminated on the weekend and Münch Racing won the series – and the wood-art award, the Faraday Trophy – thanks to a skillful piloting job by Matthias Himmelmann. While the action was terrific and the competition intense, racing fans might be a little bothered by the fact that neither the North American champion, Lightning Motors with rider Michael Barnes, nor sentimental favorite Team Electra with their electrified antique Norton, were on the starting grid (more on this later). The German team, which is comprised of some members of the XXL Racing team that ran in the 2009 Isle of Man TTXGP, might have been considered some thing of a dark horse right up until qualifying sessions when they staked their claim with pole position.

Mike Barnes/Lightning Motors wins at VIR to top TTXGP North America season thumbnail

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels , USA , Racing TTXGP North America at VIR International Raceway – Click above to watch video after the break Mike Barnes flogged his “flying banana” into first place at VIRginia International Raceway on Sunday, making history by also winning the inaugural TTXGP North America championship. His Lightning Motors mount – with its EV1 motor and A123 battery pack – has consistently outperformed the other bikes in the series, winning three of four races and is the odds-on favor to take it all at the TTXGP World championship in Albacete, Spain in late October. Though Barnes didn’t face any serious challenges on the way to the checkered flag, the same cannot be said of the next four riders
